Neck Pain Working from Home: Causes and Solutions
Neck and shoulder pain is one of the most common complaints we see in our physiotherapy practice in Winterthur — and since the home office boom, the problem has grown considerably.
Why Working from Home Strains Your Neck
In the office, people naturally move around. At home, that movement disappears. The body stays in the same position for hours, often with the head pushed forward, shoulders raised and the back slightly hunched.
The Most Common Causes
- Incorrect screen height or distance (laptop flat on the desk with no riser)
- Non-ergonomic seating
- Too few movement breaks
- Stress and mental tension manifesting physically
- One-sided mouse work without wrist support
5 Exercises You Can Do Right Now
1. Chin Retraction
Pull your chin straight back as if making a double chin. Hold 3 seconds, repeat 10 times. Strengthens the deep neck flexors.
2. Shoulder Circles
10 circles forward, 10 backward. Releases shoulder-neck tension.
3. Lateral Head Tilt
Tilt your head to one side, hold 20–30 seconds each side. Stretches the levator scapulae.
4. Thoracic Extension
Sit at the edge of your chair and lean back in a controlled motion, 5–8 repetitions.
5. The 30-30 Rule
After every 30 minutes of sitting, stand or walk for 30 seconds. Simple but highly effective.
